| Education tax breaks can soften the blow of those hefty college costs
WASHINGTON -- College is one of the most expensive investments a parent can make in a child's future. But there's a consolation prize that comes with the hefty price tag: bigger tax breaks. With average yearly in-state costs at $13,589 for a public university and $32,307 for a private college, according to the College Board, any education tax break is a boon. But be careful; in most cases you can't use the room-and-board part of that bill -- a sizable chunk of the cost -- in figuring your tax benefit. .
O’Bleness defends tax exemption
O'Bleness Memorial Hospital is not worried about the Ohio Attorney General's request for more information to justify their tax exemption, one of the hospital's top executives said. “We are happy that (Attorney General Marc Dann) is looking for more accountability because there may be some hospitals that don't provide the same level of benefits that we do," said Ward Howe, executive vice president of O'Bleness. “We provide far in excess in terms of community benefits compared to what we would contribute in taxes if we were not tax exempt." Dann is trying to keep non-profit hospitals accountable by requesting information about the charity care the 174 non-profit hospitals provide, the amount of money charged to the uninsured and the amount of money hospital executives are being paid, said Ted Hart, public information officer for Dann.

Wanna tax rebate? You gotta file first
That way, there is no chance of the rebate going into the tax preparer's account. The IRS also noted that rebate checks will be sent separately from any 2007 refund you may have coming to you. Some people who are eligible for a rebate may not receive one, at least not in full. If you owe back taxes or have other non-tax federal liabilities such as past-due child support or federal student loans, the IRS will apply at least part of your rebate to those liabilities.
